RUBENS ASKENAR composer

del buen callar

Del Buen Callar was commissioned by Auditorio de Tenerife for Quantum ensemble, for the concert series Iberia al Desnudo. The premier was given by Quantum ensemble in Auditorio de Tenerife the 28th of April 2016.

Del Buen Callar (The Good silence) is an adaptation of the Spanish proverbial phrase: “Al buen callar llaman Sancho” roughly translated as “The good silence is called Sancho”, who advises prudence and moderation when speaking.

According to the Romance of Don Sancho, the famous silence that gave rise to the saying occurred when King Ferdinand the Great divided the kingdom among his three sons, including the future Sancho II. But with a caveat: the city of Zamora should go to Urraca, the only female daughter. "Amen, Amen, Amen," they all say, except Don Sancho who is silent, "recounts the romance. With that silence what is being announced is to despoil his sister.

In this trio, I invoke the famous proverb as an elegy to discretion; an idea that I have tried to objectify through a careful distribution of materials and the strict order, in which I have submitted the instruments, both technically and structurally, serving an important function, both when they sound and when they are silent.
