Mentorship
One-with-one mentorship in composition.
How I work
Sessions are not one-to-one. They are one-with-one.
I walk the journey with you, sharing what I know, so that together we reach work you didn't think was possible. High ambition. No judgment.
About me
Composer and Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where I have taught for the past ten years. I currently supervise five doctoral candidates, four master's students and three undergraduates, and lead the orchestration courses for the master's and final-year undergraduate programmes. I have also served as external examiner for doctoral transfers and vivas at the Royal College of Music.
My practice does not separate the acoustic from the electronic. Orchestration carries deep spatial implications that demand a specific knowledge of phase and its manipulation; electronics allow the precise design of a laboratory, a synthetic space. The meeting of the two is incommensurable - the challenge of a life disciplined in composition, one I carry and share gladly with those walking a similar path.
Areas
Orchestration · Mixed composition · Modular synthesis (Serge, Eurorack, VCV Rack) · Feedback and recursive systems · Max/MSP/Gen · Live electronics · Electroacoustic composition · Project mentorship · External doctoral supervision · Audition preparation
Who I work with
A limited number of mentees each year:
Doctoral candidates · Master's and undergraduate students · Professional composers · Serious self-taught composers · Producers and electronic musicians developing their compositional thinking.
What matters is the commitment, not the background.
On electronic music
Many composers carry a quiet unease around electronic music. They feel they should already know Max, modular, electroacoustic technique - and because they don't, they avoid the territory, sometimes for an entire career.
If this is you, you are not behind. You are standing in front of a door kept closed by silence, not by difficulty. My role is to open it with you.
